Renowned Indian Fashion Designer Rohit Bal Dies At 63

| Updated: November 2, 2024 13:48

Rohit Bal, one of India’s most celebrated fashion designers, passed away on Friday at the age of 63 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Bal had been hospitalised at Delhi’s Aashlok Hospital on Wednesday following a brief period in intensive care earlier in October, as per the media source.

In a post on Instagram, the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) honoured Bal, affectionately known as “Gudda”, highlighted his transformative impact on Indian fashion. “We mourn the passing of Legendary designer Rohit Bal. He was a founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). Known for his unique blend of traditional patterns with modern sensibilities, Bal’s work redefined Indian fashion, inspiring generations. His legacy of artistry and innovation will live on in the fashion world. Rest in peace, GUDDA,” the Council wrote on Instagram.

FDCI President Sunil Sethi confirmed that Bal would be cremated on Saturday. “It’s true that he has passed away. He had a cardiac arrest… heart failure. Rohit was a legend, and we are completely shaken right now. We are arranging details for the cremation tomorrow,” he told the PTI news agency.

Born in Srinagar, Bal embarked on his career in 1986, quickly rising to prominence within India’s fashion industry. Throughout his distinguished career, Bal received multiple accolades, including ‘Designer of the Year’ at the Indian Fashion Awards in 2006 and the Kingfisher Fashion Achievement Award in 2001. In 2012, he was named the Lakmé Grand Finale Designer, cementing his place as one of the most influential figures in Indian fashion.

Despite recent health struggles, Bal made a triumphant return to the runway last month, showcasing his collection, Kaaynaat: A Bloom in the Universe, at the Lakmé Fashion Week X FDCI grand finale. The show featured actress Ananya Panday as the showstopper, wearing a classic Rohit Bal creation.

Gautam Singhania, Chairman of Raymond Group, expressed his sorrow over Bal’s passing, calling him “an incredible friend” on social media. “Heartbroken to say goodbye… You brought so much light, laughter, and kindness into the lives of everyone around you. I’m grateful for every moment we shared… You’ll be missed beyond words, but your spirit will live on in all of us. Rest peacefully, my friend,” he wrote on X.

Prominent journalist Vir Sanghvi also paid tribute to Bal, describing him as “a king among designers” and “a prince among men.” Sanghvi noted that Bal remained a warm and humble personality, despite his fame. “The world is a poorer place without him,” he shared.
