Indian students studying in Canada have complained that they have received letters demanding that they resubmit crucial documents, including their study permits, visas and academic records, including attendance and grades.
Since many international students have visas that are only valid for two years, the request from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), a Canadian government department that deals with international students, prompted widespread panic.
The move coincides with the IRCC’s tightening of regulations to control the flow of foreign students, including the introduction of more stringent financial conditions and the inquiry of possible admissions restrictions.
“I was a bit shocked when I received the email. My visa is valid until 2026, yet I was asked to submit all my documents again,” said Avinash Kaushik, a postgraduate student from Hyderabad studying in Surrey, British Columbia. “They even want proof of attendance, marks, where we are working part-time, etc.”
Similar increases in these emails were noted among students from Punjab last week. To confirm their credentials, some were even required to visit IRCC’s offices physically. “Many students are confused and worried,” stated Avinash Dasari, who is currently enrolled in school in Ontario.
Indian students make up a sizable portion of the foreign students that has risen substantially in Canada in recent years.
With 4.2 lakh registered, Canada is the country with the most Indian students, followed by the US with 3.3 lakh, according to the Ministry of External Affairs.
Students felt concerned about their futures due to the unexpected influx of emails. Manisha Patel, a business management student from Adilabad who is currently in British Columbia, stated, “We chose Canada for its welcoming environment, but this feels unfair.”
Numerous students are pleading with the IRCC to address their issues and communicate more clearly. Experts have recommended students to submit their documents as soon as possible in the meantime to prevent any problems.
According to Toronto-based immigration analyst Mehbub Rajwani, “this move appears to be part of Canada’s broader strategy to control the number of international students.”
“The introduction of financial criteria and caps is a clear signal. This move could also be to filter out genuine students as many change their designated learning institution and shift to one where there is no restriction on attendance so they can work in Canada,” he added.
