In the face of questions by the Opposition over Haryana government not giving security to INLD president Nafe Singh Rathee, leading to his assassination, state home minister Anil Vij Monday assured CBI probe into the killing.
Singh was shot dead in Jhajjar district on Sunday.
While speaking in the Haryana Assembly on Monday, Vij said, “If the House is only satisfied with a CBI probe, then I assure the members that we will hand over the case to the CBI.”
Rathee had reportedly raised apprehensions about the possibility of getting attacked but the government ignored the same.
Soon after the Question Hour, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, said there should be a “detailed discussion on the law and order situation of Haryana in the house.”
“It is a very serious matter, a former MLA has been shot dead, and those who stand booked are also political people. There should be a detailed discussion on the law and order situation in Haryana on the floor of the House,” he said.
Meanwhile, in response, Vij said it was wrong to say that the entire law and order machinery of the state has collapsed.
“Even Rathee’s nephew who has got the FIR lodged also named his political opponents responsible for his killing. Whosoever he may be, we won’t spare those responsible for this killing,” he said.
Congress leader Geeta Bhukkal said the fact that the attack took place in Jhajjar district on a day when the CM himself was present was a reflection of the lawlessness in Haryana.
“Look at the confidence of these criminals who could execute such an attack on the day when the chief minister was also in Jhajjar district only,” she said.
“It is alright that an entire police force has been deployed to prevent farmers from entering, but that doesn’t mean that you leave the entire state to such criminals. Businessmen are getting extortion calls and now such a murder is a matter of grave concern. We hope that the home minister of our state will ensure corrective measures so that such an incident is not repeated. We also want assurance from the CM,” she said further.
“He (Rathee) was state chief of a political party, he had demanded security from the chief minister and home minister, but still it wasn’t provided to him. Why wasn’t security provided to him?” said Congress MLA Aftab Ahmad.
Hooda while insisting on a CBI probe said, “We demand that a CBI inquiry has to be there; it should be monitored by a sitting Judge… I am not demanding as Leader of the Opposition, but as a resident of this state,” said Hooda.
“I had already said that it is an unfortunate and sad incident. Here, the issue is being raised that Rathee had sought security but wasn’t given. It is correct that Rathee had sought security. He had written a letter to SP, Jhajjar. It was registered and it was investigated. A man was found stationed in Kolkata who was threatening Rathee and that man was arrested and action was taken against him,” said Vij in reponse.
