Randeep Hooda’s Swatantra Veer Savarkar Opens IFFI 2024

| Updated: November 23, 2024 20:09

The screening of Swatantra Veer Savarkar, a historical drama directed by and starring Randeep Hooda, marked an incredible start to the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024. In the film, Jay Patel plays revolutionary Shyamji Krishna Varma, who was instrumental in India’s fight for independence.

The movie honours Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Indian politician.

Actor Jay Patel told a section of the media, “Being in India, my home country, was one of the best experiences”. He reflected on the honour of representing the film on such a renowned platform, saying, “The audience’s enthusiastic applause and warm reception confirmed the film’s impact and relevance,” he said.

Patel said, “The movie pays homage to our fight for freedom and the unsung heroes who gave their lives to provide us with the liberty and joy we have today.”

The reaction to the movie was outstanding, with many people profoundly affected. “The audience applauded when the movie ended,” Patel recalled.

During the screening, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, seated next to Patel, also expressed his appreciation for the movie.

Patel and Randeep Hooda’s friendship for more than 17 years gave their on-screen personas more nuance. In addition to their love of horses, the performers have a close relationship based on respect and encouragement for one another. Patel remarked, “Our friendship is thick and built on rock-solid support for one another,” comparing their bond to that of Savarkar and Shyamji Krishna Varma.

Savarkar was one of several freedom fighters mentored by Varma, who was a scholar and revolutionary. India House in London, where he lived, became a centre for nationalist activity. For us, it was nearly like reliving history,” Patel said.

Many have already praised Hooda’s portrayal of Savarkar as one of his best. Patel’s subtle portrayal of Varma complemented his physical and emotional transition into the part, making their scenes one of the movie’s highlights.

Patel revealed that the audience exploded in ovation, and many people acknowledged how much the movie taught them about our past. These heroes’ sacrifices have allowed us to enjoy the freedom we do today. This movie will encourage people to study more about our past and continue the legacy of these outstanding people.
