Massive search operation enters third day as terrorists remain holed up in forested Kandi area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district. Officials report no fresh contact with the ultras, who are believed to have been involved in an attack on civilians earlier this year.
The operation, dubbed Trinetra, has resulted in the deaths of five Army personnel and one terrorist, with a major-rank officer sustaining injuries. The Kesari Hill forest saw an explosion triggered by terrorists, killing five soldiers, while the remaining terrorist was gunned down the following morning. Despite heavy rain and difficult conditions, the operation continues with the area under a tight security cordon.
The operation has brought together Army, police, and Central Reserve Police Force personnel in a massive combing effort. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, and Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha visited the Ace of Spades Division headquarters in Rajouri to review the situation. The recent attacks in Rajouri and Poonch have resulted in the killing of 35 people, including 26 soldiers, in areas that were previously declared terrorism-free over a decade ago.
