Raju Bhargava, an undisputed and highly experienced officer, was today appointed as the new commissioner of Rajkot. This appointment does not come as a surprise as Bhargava, with his clean image, was considered the front-runner for the position. Vibes of India was the first to carry a report on March 8, which said that Bhargava had a strong possibility of becoming Rajkot Police Commissioner.
The post has been vacant ever since Rajkot Police Commissioner Manoj Agarwal had to step down after being involved in several scandals. Serious allegations were levelled against Agarwal and officials of his nearest crime branch, including PI and PSI. They were accused of demanding commissions and also being a part of money laundering case. The allegations were made by government legislator, who eventually forced the Home Department to order an inquiry. The senior IPS officer also directed the DGP Vikas Sahay to investigate the allegations and submit a report immediately.
This scandal shook Rajkot, forcing the authorities to especially appoint someone with a clean image and a strong reputation. And this is where Raju Bhargava came in. Known for his calm disposition good and friendly personality, Bhargava was an obvious choice. The government appointed him out of half a dozen officers.
Who Is Raju Bhargava?
Raju Bhargava, a native of Rajasthan, has done his BSc MA and MBA. He is a 1995 bench IPS officer, who has long served on deputation outside the state. For the last seven years or so, he has served as a senior officer in the CRPF. Previously, he was Additional Director General of Police Gandhinagar, Weapons Unit. He has served as superintendent of police for a long time in different districts of Gujarat like Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Mehsana, Narmada, Godhra as well as Surat City.
Prafulla Kumar Roshan, a 1996 bench IPS officer, has now been posted as Additional Director General of Police, Weapons Unit.
