The Gujarat High Court on Sunday took suo moto cognizance of the fire tragedy that claimed 33 lives at a gaming zone in Rajkot, saying that it was a “man-made disaster” prima facie.
It was observed by the bench of Justices Biren Vaishnav and Devan Desai that gaming facilities and recreational amenities had been built without the necessary permissions from the rightful authorities.
The Municipal Corporations of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot have been directed by the bench to appear before a hearing on Monday. They were asked to furnish details about the legal provisions that either permit these units to function under their jurisdiction or under which they were established.
A massive fire that broke out at Rajkot’s TRP Gamezone claimed 33 lives, including 10 children under the age of 12. Three more people were injured. The officials said that on Saturday night, a large number of individuals were in the area taking part in a summer vacation outing.
