A Qatar court has accepted the appeal filed by the Indian government against the death sentence of eight former Indian navy personnel, who were arrested on alleged charges of spying, and agreed to hear their plea soon without giving a specific timeline.
The eight former Indian Navy personnel were given the death sentence by Qatar’s Court of First Instance in October 2023. The Indian government had described the ruling as “deeply” shocking and vowed to explore all legal options in the case.
In a welcome development, the Qatari court has accepted the appeal filed by the Indian government. This is a positive step forward, and we hope that the court will overturn the death sentence and release the eight men.
The Indian government should continue to provide all possible support to the eight men and their families during this difficult time. We also urge the Qatari government to ensure that the men receive a fair trial.
