Public opinion on ban of alcohol in Gujarat

| Updated: August 29, 2021 16:37

The alcohol prohibition act in Gujarat has always been under radar and a topic of discussion. On the other hand, Gujarat High Court has agreed to hear a petition challenging the ban on liquor in Gujarat in which the petitioner said the ban is against the right to privacy. The petition further argued that the government could not decide what a person can eat or drink within the premises of his home. The petitioner has exercised the right to privacy while challenging the alcohol prohibition act. On this, Vibes of India has taken the opinion of many people of Gujarat.
The details are as follows:
According to Harshal, a resident of Jamnagar, “Almost all the districts in the state sell illicit liquor in broad daylight. Every day, we read reports of bottles being crushed and destroyed. If not everywhere, the consumption of alcohol should be allowed in private places, this will not only generate tax revenue for the state but can also create formal employment and bring to light the reality of illegal liquor sales in the state.
According to Dr Disha Ruparelia Bhate, “I don’t really think that lifting the ban on alcohol is a good option in Gujarat. Lifting the ban on alcohol is not the solution. Now, if a beer bar or wine shop is opened, it will be an additional concern. Alcohol consumption will be allowed and a percentage of the total population will be always in liquor clubs. Gujarat is the “Karma Bhoomi” of our Father of the Nation. Gujarat has significant (and perhaps more than other states) industries to generate tax revenue. Lifting the ban will not make the situation better. The poor cannot afford branded liquor, so they consume alcohol.” She added, “Even if the sale of alcohol is allowed openly, they will continue to drink. The government just needs to enforce a stricter ban on alcohol. Alcohol consumption has also caused many problems in the state. Almost every day, we hear cases of reckless driving and hit and run incidents occur due to intoxication. More and more young people are drinking alcohol. This trend is a big threat to the future of the state. Imagine what the situation would be like if the sale of alcohol became legal.”
According to Bhavesh Rathore, “Given the current situation, there is a demand for a definite change in the alcohol ban policy in Gujarat. Despite the current ban on alcohol in Gujarat, there is not a single city in Gujarat where alcohol is not available, so concrete steps should be taken to deal with this situation. For this, strict policies should be formulated and it is necessary that they be implemented not only on paper but also at the ground level.
According to Ahmedabad resident, Amit Dave, “It is a strict law. This is a law against the fundamental rights of the citizen, if it is bad for Gujarat then it should be bad for the whole world. And, this also raises the question, what is the condition of a safe state of Gujarat, if there is no alcohol ban in Gujarat, will Gujarat become UP?
