India has achieved a significant milestone in its defence sector with the successful first flight test of the indigenously developed Agni-5 missile. This missile is equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, a feature that sets it apart. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Mission Divyastra on X.
He expressed his pride in the scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for their achievement. “Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with MIRV technology,” he said.
The MIRV technology allows a single missile to deploy multiple warheads at different locations, ensuring a precise and targeted attack. With this successful test, India joins a select group of countries with MIRV capabilities.
The missile system is equipped with indigenous Avionics systems and high-accuracy sensor packages, ensuring that the re-entry vehicles reach their targets with the desired accuracy. This capability is a testament to India’s growing technological prowess.
The Agni-5 missile, with a range of 5000 km, has been developed keeping in mind the long-term security needs of the country. It can cover almost the entire Asia, including the northernmost part of China and several regions in Europe. The Agni series, which includes Agni 1 to 4 with ranges from 700 km to 3,500 km, have already been deployed.
President Droupadi Murmu also hailed the test as an “important milestone in India’s march towards greater geo-strategic role and capabilities”. She said, “The first flight test of Agni V under Mission Divyastra marks a very important milestone in India’s march towards greater geo-strategic role and capabilities. The state-of-the-art technology developed indigenously is a firm step in the direction of India becoming Atmanirbhar. I convey my heartiest congratulations to the Team DRDO for this major achievement. I am sure they will keep moving apace in their quest for excellence and self-reliance.”
