NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu has gained a significant lead in the first round of counting, which began at the Parliament House around 1:30 pm. Of the 748 valid votes, she got 540, while Yashwant Sinha was at 208, and 15 were invalid. Final results are expected around four this afternoon.
This morning, ballot boxes that were securely flown into Delhi from all the states were opened, and the process of counting the votes began.
Interestingly, 540 MPs voted for Murmu, but NDA has a total of 441 MPs in both houses. This means she won the votes of 99 MPs that were not NDA members. Cross-voting has been a matter of discussion during this Presidential election. Earlier, NCP demanded an explanation from their leaders who voted for Murmu.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be to visit Droupadi Murmu to personally congratulate her on the win, the sources said. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party has also organized a roadshow after Murmu’s victory celebration.
