In a move applauded by legal experts and community leaders alike, President Biden has nominated Judge Sanket J. Bulsara for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Judge Bulsara, currently serving as a United States Magistrate Judge for the same district, brings a wealth of experience and expertise in securities, contracts, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters to the bench.
At 46 years old, Judge Bulsara has already made significant contributions to the legal field. His profile boasts of presiding over 400 settlement conferences, numerous bench and jury trials, and authoring over 300 published opinions since his appointment in 2017. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first South Asian American federal judge to serve on any court in the Second Circuit.
The nomination has garnered support from influential figures, including New York Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand. Senator Schumer praised Bulsara as a “first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant,” hailing him as a symbol of the American Dream and a trailblazer in the legal community. The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association also commended the nomination, emphasizing the importance of judicial representation for the South Asian community in New York City.
Prior to his current role, Judge Bulsara served as the Acting General Counsel of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he held various positions of responsibility since 2015. His legal career includes stints at prestigious firms such as Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr L.L.P. and Munger, Tolles & Olson L.L.P., as well as a term as a Special Assistant District Attorney at the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney’s Office.
Judge Bulsara was born in the Bronx to immigrant parents from India and Kenya. His upbringing in New Rochelle and Edgemont instilled in him a strong sense of community and service. His father’s work as an engineer for the City of New York and his mother’s career as a nurse underscored the values of hard work and dedication that Judge Bulsara brings to his judicial role.
Educated at Harvard Law School and Harvard College, Judge Bulsara’s academic achievements reflect his commitment to excellence. He earned his J.D. cum laude in 2002 and his A.B. magna cum laude in 1998. Currently residing on Long Island with his wife, Christine DeLorenzo, Judge Bulsara’s nomination signals a new chapter in his distinguished legal career.
