After fighting for her life for 24 hours, the 16-year-old girl who was hit by an SUV driven by a 17-year-old boy succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital late on Saturday night. The accident occurred on Friday in Thaltej.
The juvenile accused, who passed his Class 10 exam this month, was driving his father’s Fortuner. He is not entitled to a driving licence owing to his age. The the boy’s father, Govind Bharwad, and brother (owner of the car), Nilesh Bharwad, have been booked for allowing the minor to drive.
The traffic police have questioned the teen driver under provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and has added section 304 (A) for further investigation.
This shocking incident comes soon after the Porsche crash in Pune on May 19 which killed two techies. A minor boy, who was allegedly driving his father’s Porsche Taycan at 200 kmph, hit a motorcycle leading to two deaths. The police have arrested the boy’s father, grandfather and mother in connection with the case and an alleged cover-up attempt. The accused is in a remand home.
Teen driver tries to flee
In the Ahmedabad accident, the victim, Diya Prajapati, a Class 10 student at a Thaltej school, was walking outside her Sandipani Society residence at around 4.30 pm when the speeding SUV hit her. Passersby rushed a severely injured Diya to a private hospital. The teenage driver tried to flee but was caught by members of the public and his family members were called.
According to Divya’s father, Sandip Prajapati, has alleged that the boy and his friends did not even try to free his daughter who was trapped between the SUV’s wheels and the road divider. Instead the teen driver ran the SUV over her multiple times in an attempt to reverse the car and flee.
The boy has apparently shared several videos of his driving stunts and speeding on his Instagram account.
According to police sources, the boy’s father, who is a land broker, told cops that he was not at home when the boy took the car key and went for a drive. A separate FIR against the boy’s father will be filed.
However, police action following this accident raises questions. The FIR in the case, which is required to be uploaded on the Gujarat police website, has been put under the category of “sensitive cases”. Usually, offences involving sexual violence fall under this category.
