In the not very far past, deputy registrar Jitendra Vishnubhai Patel and his subordinate, Momin Rizwan, were caught accepting a bribe of Rs 11 lakhs at the Revenue Bhawan, Sanand in Ahmedabad. Acting on a tip-off, the arrest was made by officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). Thereon, according to protocol, the offenders were handed over to law enforcers at Shahibaug police station.
Now here, Police Inspector V.D. Vaghela is reported to have greeted the arrival and made sure “they were all comfortable.” Taking hospitality further, the inspector is reported to have ordered in food from an eatery. The lock up was cleaned out and a pedestal fan was ushered in. So was a mattress. “The accused are habituated to gutkha and so arrangements were made,” added a tight-lipped constable at Naranpura PS.
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the Rs 11 lakhs was the “negotiated” amount. The duo initially demanded Rs 18 lakhs from the harrased citizen, who approached them with “documents in order” for a business-related matter.
When questioned, the DCP, Zone-4, informed that an inquiry has been initiated.
