The personal handle of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on micro-blogging social media site – Twitter was briefly hacked on Sunday, December 12. In a very short span of time, the Twitter handle was restored and the tweet made before restoration was taken down.
The tweets made by the hackers at 2:11 AM on Sunday from Prime Minister’s handle said that bitcoin has been officially adopted by the country as a legal tender. The malicious tweet read, “India has officially adopted bitcoin as legal tender. The government has officially bought 500 BTC and is distributing them to all residents of the country.” The tweet also had a hyperlink that further read, “The future has come today!”
In around an hour, the PMO via a tweet informed that the Prime Minister’s handle was briefly compromised but it has been immediately secured. The tweet from PMO read, “The Twitter handle of PM @narendramodi was very briefly compromised. The matter was escalated to Twitter and the account has been immediately secured. In the brief period that the account was compromised, any Tweet shared must be ignored.”
