Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a crucial bilateral meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in Vadodara on October 28, according to a statement released by the Gujarat government on Monday. Both nations are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Laxmi Vilas Palace’s Durbar Hall.
During their visit, Modi and Sánchez will jointly inaugurate the Tata-Airbus TATA Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL) manufacturing facility under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, which will produce C-295 transport aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone for this venture two years ago, on October 30, 2022.
“This Tata-Airbus project marks the beginning of a new chapter in aviation for India’s defence sector, with transport aircraft being produced domestically for the Indian Air Force,” the statement highlighted.
The Gujarat government also noted that the Airbus project, apart from bolstering national security, will contribute to the country’s economic development. Special security measures are being enforced across Vadodara in preparation for the arrival of the two leaders, with police and local officials ensuring safety and order throughout the city.
Before the inauguration ceremony, Modi and Sánchez will participate in a 2.5-kilometre roadshow, after which they are expected to head to the prominent Laxmi Vilas Palace. They will have lunch at the Gaekwad royal residence.
“This is the first time two heads of government will be hosted at Laxmi Vilas Palace. It is also PM Modi’s first visit to the palace since taking office. The palace is being beautifully decorated, and we will ensure the dignitaries receive a proper welcome,” said royal scion Samarjit Gaekwad to a section of media.
To assist with the event, 60 officers, including five deputy collectors from outside Vadodara, have been deployed by the state government.
The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has been working to ensure the city is ready for the visit, especially after the recent floods. Roads, footpaths and public spaces are being cleaned, while urgent repairs are being made to areas affected by flood damage. The government statement also mentioned beautification efforts, including painting and tree planting along city roads. Major landmarks such as Maharaja Sayajirao University, Kirti Mandir, Nyay Mandir and Laxmi Vilas Palace are being decorated with special lighting, fresh paint, and graffiti artwork to welcome the dignitaries.
Following the Vadodara visit, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Ekta Nagar (formerly known as Kevadia) in Narmada district on October 30 and 31. His visit will coincide with Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, celebrated annually on October 31 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. On October 30, Modi will inaugurate several development projects in Ekta Nagar, including a 1.5-kilometre walkway from the parking area to the Statue of Unity (SoU) and a trauma centre in Kevadia.
Narmada district officials also revealed that Modi is likely to lay the foundation stone for the long-awaited Museum of Royal Kingdoms, which will showcase the history of the 562 princely states that signed treaties of accession with India during Partition. The museum, to be located near Kevadia, is expected to cost Rs 260 crore to build.
