Mission LiFE, as described by the Prime Minister Modi, seeks to be India’s signature initiative at the United Nations to encourage both individual and collective action to safeguard and preserve the environment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the Lifestyle for Environment – Mission LiFE, at the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar in Gujarat’s Kevadia in the presence of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres. PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to poll-bound Gujarat, addressing the delegates at the event said “A perception was created that climate change is merely a policy-related issue, that govts or international institutions will take steps regarding. But now, people are feeling the effects of climate change, continuing ahead by saying, some people prefer dropping AC temperatures to 17 degrees, this creates a negative impact on the environment. Our glaciers are melting, rivers are drying up. Mission LiFE will help in fighting the climate crisis”.
PM Modi said that “Using cycles while going to gyms, doing our bit to change our lifestyles can be of help to the environment, adding, “Reuse, Reduce and Recycling are part of India’s traditions and culture. We need to bring back these practices and work towards making sustainable choices.”
Ahead of the launch, PM Modi held a bilateral meeting with UN chief Guterres. The duo paid floral tributes at the Statue of Unity at Kevadia and the UN Secretary-General joined Prime Minister Modi at the launch of the Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) booklet, logo, and tagline.
Mission LiFE aims at following a three-pronged strategy for changing people’s collective approach toward sustainability. This includes encouraging individuals to practice simple yet effective environment-friendly actions in their daily lives (demand), enabling industries and markets to respond swiftly to the changing demand (supply), and to influence government and industrial policy to support both sustainable consumption and production (policy).
Modi will also participate in the 10th Heads of Missions Conference, which is being organised from October 20 to 22 in Kevadia by the Ministry of External Affairs. The conference will bring together 118 heads of Indian Missions (ambassadors and high commissioners) from all over the world. The conference will provide an opportunity to have detailed internal discussions on issues such as contemporary geo-political and geo-economic environment, connectivity and India’s foreign policy priorities.
PM Modi will lay the foundation stone of multiple development initiatives worth more than Rs 1,970 crore at Vyara in Tapi district.
