In a move to increase both tourism and commerce with Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that India has decided to set up two new consulates in the cities of Yekaterinburg and Kazan. India currently has two consulates in Russia, at St Petersburg and Vladivostok.
During his two-day visit to Russia, the Prime Minister announced the establishment of new consulates in Yekaterinburg and Kazan while addressing the Indian diaspora.
“I want to share some good news with you all. We have decided to open new consulates in Kazan and Yekaterinburg. This will enhance travel and business trade,” Modi said.
Russia’s fourth-largest city, Yekaterinburg, has developed to become an important centre for the economy. The city had hosted four FIFA World Cup matches in 2018, when the sporting event took place in Russia. Kazan, a focus of growing Russian culture and education, is situated at the meeting point of the Volga and Kazanka rivers.
Russia will also host the BRICS Summit in October in Kazan. Modi on Monday began a notable visit to Russia for the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Vladimir Putin, his first trip since the beginning of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
