Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated the re-developed Kochrab Ashram and launched the master plan of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial, at Mahatma Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad.
Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said, “This Sabarmati Ashram of Bapu has always been the center of an amazing energy. Whenever we recieve the opportunity to come here, we can clearly feel Bapu’s inspiration within us. The ideals of truth and non-violence, the resolve of devotion towards the country, the sense of service to God in the. Service of the poor and devoid, Sabarmati Ashram keeps these values of Bapu alive even to this day.” Bapu”s Sabarmati Ashram is heritage not only for the country, but also for entire mankind, the PM said.
Kochrab Ashram was the first Ashram established by Mahatma Gandhi after coming to India from South Africa in 1915. It is still preserved as a memorial and tourist space by Gujarat Vidyapeeth.
Under this master plan, the existing five-acre area of the Ashram will be expanded to 55 acres. This 36 existing buildings shall undergo restoration, out of which, 20 buildings including ‘Hriday Kunj’, which served as Gandhi’s residence, will be conserved.
The PM aslo said that People should come forward as guides and there should be a competition. There should be a competition among children to know who can work as the ‘best guide’. In Sabarmati Ashram, who can provide service as the best guide?. A competition will ensure that all children come to know about the construction date of the Ashram, what it is and it’s role.
Remembering Gandhi’s contribution, the PM said, “Future generations coming here will be able to understand how the saint of Sabarmati(Mahatma Gandhi) had revolutionised the nation with the might of the Charkha,” said PM Modi. “We discuss vocal for local. Originally, it is nothing but the Swadeshi idea propagated by Gandhiji. It has the idea of Atmanirbhar Bharat envisioned by Gandhiji,” said PM Modi.
Earier, the PM also inaugurated the country’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at Suzuki Motor Gujarat, which is an initiative part of the Centre’s flagship Gati Shakti programme. Aligned with India’s carbon net zero emissions target,this in-plant railway siding aims to reduce carbon footprint in logistics, bring down fossil fuel consumption, and reduce road congestion.
Once fully operational, the Gujarat railway siding facility can dispatch 300,000 cars annually to 15 destinations across India.
