A mother of three was left staggered when she birthed twins with entirely different skin colors.
Chantelle Broughtonm, 29, reveals that she is often inquired if the children are actually her own. The odds are so rare that genetics experts say that the chance of this happening is one in a million.
Chantelle’s son Ayon and daughter Azirah stepped into the world in April. Ayon was born with green eyes and fair skin while Azirah has brown eyes and a much darker complexion.
The mother of the bizarre kids explained that though she looks white, she has a mixed race background with a Nigerian maternal grandad. His husband, Ashton, also 29, is half Jamaican, half Scottish.
Chantelle said that the twins did not look a lot different at birth, but as time went by, Azirah’s skin complexion started getting “darker and darker”
She further commented that the four-month-old twins now have opposite personalities but are getting on well. The new mother, who is also an auxiliary nurse from Nottingham, has no regrets about how the twins turned out, as she appreciates her unique little family.
“Azirah was slightly darker at birth but you couldn’t really tell. Now as weeks have gone on she has gotten to the point where she’s darker than her dad.” says Chantelle
“Coming on to the personalities of both the children, they are again opposites. Azirah is laid back and chilled, whereas Ayon wants a lot more attention. He always wants to be rocked and is constantly babbling along. Azirah doesn’t do that very often.”
“ Though the difference exists in terms of looks and personalities, they get along well- they stare at each other and smile. I think their hair will be different too. Azirah will have thick and curly hair and Ayon will have completely different ones. You can already feel the difference in texture.”
Chantelle said that it’s not a surprise that the twins invite a lot of attention when they go out. She jokes that people might believe that they have separate dads.
She said that when you have a twin pushchair, people seem to notice you more. And now, people are going to think that she has had two different kids with two different dads.
“They do a double take and comment on how unusual it is. People just stop and say ‘oh my god’, they just look totally different. I’ve had people ask ‘are they both yours?’”
She reiterated that she would not have it any other way, as she loves the uniqueness of this one in a million scenario.
