AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi was denied permission by authorities in Ahmedabad to meet former Uttar Pradesh MP Atiq Ahmad, who is lodged at the Ahmedabad-based Sabarmati Central Jail, in the wake of Covid-19 guidelines, a party leader said.
Owaisi was on a day-long visit to Ahmedabad to meet party workers, office bearers and supporters. He had also planned to meet Ahmad, the jailed gangster who recently joined the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM).
Owaisi, in a conversation with Vibes of India (VoI), said, “We don’t know why I was told to not meet Ahmad. I was ready to meet the Superintendent to ask the reason, but was told that I would be detained if I go anywhere near the premises.”
On the question of whether Owaisi — who had recently announced that his part will contest 2022 Gujarat Assembly Polls — considers Gujarat a difficult state to win given that it is a BJP stronghold, he said, “Each and every election is difficult, whether its Zilla Parishad, Municipal polls, assembly elections or general elections. We have to be prepared for it, and that is the reason why I am here. We are taking stock of our preparations at the moment.”
