| Updated: July 19, 2022 12:30

Chetan Parmar who is a resident of Botad, who gained weight up to 210 kg in the last 10 years, saw major problems due to the weight, such as diabetes, cardiovascular troubles, sleep apnoea among others.
He was the first one to go through many of the planned surgeries for weight reduction at Civil Hospital last week.
D.r Prashant Mehta, D.r Rakesh Makwana, and D.r Vikram Mehta among other anesthetists and experts, carried out the bariatric surgery. Dr Mehta revealed that the normal body index is 25, while Chetan’s was an alarming 73.

D.r Mehta further said that the first surgery had already reduced his weight by 5 kg, and he will eventually lose 130 kg over the next few months. He also shared how they underwent many issues, like requiring two operation tables to operate on him and thinking of ways to lower the risk of adverse effects under anesthesia. He stated that even X-rays and blood pressure readings were difficult in such cases.
The medical superintendent of Civil Hospital, Dr Rakesh Joshi shared that Chetan was the largest patient to get bariatric surgery at the hospital. He said that at the hospital they were providing surgeries at nominal cost . Anyone who has a BMI over 40 is eligible for this surgery. He also pointed out that the treating hospitals first try non-surgical ways to work on the weight, and then leave surgery as a last resort.
