Uttarayan in Ahmedabad turned tragic as more than 100 people sustained injuries from kite strings or falls while flying kites. Among the victims, a 28-year-old man lost his life and a 37-year-old woman was left in critical condition with a deep throat injury caused by a kite string.
According to government reports, Sheth LG Hospital in Maninagar treated 26 individuals on the day of Uttarayan, with eight admitted due to serious injuries. Among them, a young man named Raju Bharatbhai (28) succumbed to his injuries yesterday afternoon after falling during the festivities. Meanwhile, Chandrikaben (37), who suffered a severe throat injury from a kite string, remains in critical condition.
Other hospitals across the city also reported significant casualties. Saraspur General Hospital admitted 33 injured individuals, SVP Hospital treated 15, VS Hospital admitted 23 and Nagari Hospital treated two patients.
Despite a ban on the sale of Chinese kite strings and glass-coated strings, their illegal availability contributed to the surge in injuries. These hazardous materials, often used for kite-flying, caused numerous accidents, including deep cuts and dangerous falls.
