Opposition to Corner Centre Over Adani Case, Waqf Bill in Winter Session

| Updated: November 25, 2024 13:37

The winter session of Parliament is set to commence today, with legislators anticipated to deliberate on several bills, including the Waqf Act (Amendment) Bill. The opposition is expected to highlight issues such as the violence in Manipur, air pollution in northern India and bribery allegations involving the Adani Group.

A number of bills are scheduled for introduction, discussion and passage during the winter session, which ends on December 20.

These include the following: the Railways (Amendment) Bill, the Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, the Oilfields (Regulation and Development) Amendment Bill, the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, the Bharatiya Vayuyan Vidheyak, the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, the Bills of Lading Bill and the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill.

In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the opposition members of the Joint Working Committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill sought an extension of time to finish the consultation process on the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act.

In an all-party meeting conducted on Sunday ahead of the session, the government called on all parties to work together to ensure that Parliament runs smoothly, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh leading the ruling party.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the opposition’s request to debate the bribery claims against the Adani group by stating that the appropriate business advisory committees of both Houses would determine the agenda for the meeting.

Gautam Adani and seven other people were charged by US authorities last week on charges of engaging in a $265 million scheme to bribe Indian government officials in order to get contracts for power supplies. The Adani Group has called the accusations “baseless” and refuted them.

The issues that the INDIA bloc would address during the Parliament session are anticipated to be decided by Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.
