Sharad Pawar, the founder and head of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), has announced that he will not be stepping down as the party’s president. Instead, he will focus on making organisational changes within the party and work for the NCP with renewed vigour.
Pawar’s decision comes after senior party leaders met him at his residence in south Mumbai, following his surprise announcement on Tuesday that he would be quitting as president of the 24-year-old party he founded in 1999.
While seeking more time to reconsider his decision earlier in the day, Pawar emphasised the need for a succession plan in the NCP. The committee formed to choose his successor had rejected his decision to step down.
Pawar, a Rajya Sabha MP and stalwart of the opposition made the announcement at an event earlier in the week, stunning party leaders and workers. He clarified, however, that he was not retiring from public life.
