Alphonso mangoes are extremely expensive, so a Pune trader is providing the king of fruits on equated monthly instalments, or EMI.
Mangoes should be able to be purchased in instalments if refrigerators and air conditioners can, says Gaurav Sanas of Gurukripa Traders and Fruit Products.
The best mangoes, Alphonso or “Hapus” mangoes from Devgad and Ratnagiri, are currently being sold in the retail market for Rs 800 to 1300 per dozen.
Sanas claimed that his family’s business is the first to sell mangos on EMI in the whole country. “The prices are always very high at the start of the season. We thought if refrigerators, ACs and other appliances can be bought on EMI, why not mangoes? Everyone can afford mangoes then,” he said.
The process for purchasing fruit at his store on EMI is comparable to purchasing mobile phones with monthly instalments.
The customer must use a credit card, and the purchase price is divided into three, six, or twelve monthly instalments. Nevertheless, the scheme requires a minimum purchase of Rs 5,000.
Sanas stated that so far, four customers had utilised the scheme.
