The Delhi High Court says it sees no reason to interfere with the Agnipath scheme.
In dismissing a number of petitions opposing the Centre’s Agnipath scheme for armed services recruiting, the court notes that “The Agnipath scheme was introduced in national interest and to ensure that armed forces are better equipped.”
On December 15 of last year, the court had reserved its decision regarding the group of pleas.
The Agnipath scheme, introduced on June 14, 2022, establishes guidelines for the recruitment of youth. According to these rules, those between 17-and-a-half and 21 years of age are eligible to apply and they would be inducted for a four-year tenure.
25% of them are eligible for future regular service under the scheme. Protests, over the idea, broke out in a number of states after it was revealed. Eventually, the government raised the maximum age to 23 for recruitment in 2022.
