Nisha Kumari has become the first person from Vadodara to scale Mt Everest. She now aspires to climb the Seven Summits.
Hailing from a family with military background, Nisha Kumari was part of the inaugural group of the 8K Expeditions of Everest Spring 2023 team. Accompanied by fellow Indian climbers and individuals from United States, China, France, Mongolia, and more, Kumari had the guidance of ten Sherpas who served as her invaluable guides during the expedition. Her three-year-long preparation included rigorous training in snow-covered regions of the Himalayas, as well as cycling and running to build physical endurance.
“The sensation was beyond imagination as I stood atop Mount Everest, witnessing a breathtaking and unimaginable scene. The first thing I did was unfurl the National Flag and proudly wave it at the summit. I also captured a photograph with the flag, immortalizing that moment. Now, my aim is to conquer the Seven Summits,” Nisha said.
She overcame severe challenges both during and after her expedition, many of which posed a significant threat to her life. Suffering frostbite in both of her hands, she was promptly transported to Mumbai for immediate medical treatment. After undergoing a month-long treatment, she returned home, eager to embark on further mountaineering adventures.
With full determination, she explained that “The weather conditions were severe, with strong winds and bitter cold at the summit. Upon returning to Camp 2, I discovered the frostbite and was airlifted to a hospital in Kathmandu. The doctors there recommended Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chamber (HBOT), and I received treatment at Asvini Hospital in Mumbai. The experience was excruciatingly painful, and my fingers are still in the process of healing. Nevertheless, I possess great mental strength and aspire to conquer the Seven Summits after completing my treatment.”
She was honoured for her success at Urmi School in Vadodara, accompanied by her mother Sona Devi. Nisha thanked everyone for their help and encouraged the students to participate in sports throughout their lives. As part of her advice, she requested the students to follow their dreams and pay attention to those who inspire them.
