Roma Ray, the niece of Indian freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, passed away on Wednesday at her residence in south Kolkata. She was 95 and had been suffering from age-related ailments, her family confirmed.

She has left behind her son, two daughters and five grandchildren, her son Ashis Ray said in a statement.

The daughter of eminent barrister and freedom fighter Sarat Chandra Bose, Roma Ray had witnessed her uncle’s prominent role in India’s independence movement, including his election as President of the Indian National Congress in 1938.

She was also known for her close relationship with Netaji’s wife, Emilie Schenkl, having lived in Vienna during the 1950s, where Schenkl also resided. Ray was invited to deliver a speech at Schenkl’s funeral in Germany in 1996.

Roma Ray was married to renowned medical practitioner Dr Sachis Ray.
