New Wildfire Erupts North of Los Angeles, Prompts Mass Evacuations

| Updated: January 23, 2025 12:15

In an area already tense following two fatal fires, a new wildfire broke out north of Los Angeles. It’s growing in size, causing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes.

The incident brings into sharp focus the uncontrolled combustion of fossil fuels that is impacting Earth. Climate activists and environmentalists have in the past raised concerns about the rising average global temperatures which could be modifying weather patterns.

Although January falls in the midst of the area’s rainy season, Southern California has experienced little substantial rainfall for approximately eight months, rendering the landscape extremely dry.

In a few hours, fierce fires were reportedly consuming slopes close to Castaic Lake, quickly engulfing nearly 8,000 acres (3,200 hectares).

According to reports, strong, dry Santa Ana winds were speeding across the area, fanning the fire by spreading a thick layer of smoke and hazardous embers in front of the flames, raising concerns that it would expand even farther.

As many as 31,000 people were ordered to evacuate the area around the lake, which is located near the city of Santa Clarita and about 35 miles (56 kilometres) north of Los Angeles.

Television footage showed police frantically urging people to leave the impacted area.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said the Pitchess Detention Centre in Castaic received an evacuation order, and around 500 inmates were being moved to another area.

Following the blaze, called the Hughes Fire, Robert Jensen, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, urged everyone to flee the area right away.

“We’ve seen the devastation caused by people failing to follow those orders in the Palisades and Eaton fires,” he was quoted as saying. “I don’t want to see that here in our community as well. If you’ve been issued an evacuation order, please get out.”

The Pitchess Detention Centre in Castaic was placed under evacuation, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, and about 500 prisoners were being transferred to a nearby facility. About 4,600 prisoners housed at other local institutions were sheltering in the place, he told broadcaster KCAL9, but buses were available in case circumstances changed and they had to be relocated.

The California Highway Patrol reported that the fire was affecting traffic on the I5 freeway, causing a portion of the road — which stretches along the entire US West Coast — to be closed.

Helicopters and aircraft were present, dropping water and fire retardant on the fire.

That fleet comprised two Super Scoopers, large amphibious aircraft capable of transporting hundreds of gallons (litres) of water.

Teams from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Angeles National Forest were also combating the fire from the ground.

Cal Fire’s Brent Pascua mentioned that various factors had aligned to create an especially unstable situation.
