The case of threat emails being sent to Anand Niketan School (Satellite) in Ahmedabad via the dark web has seen a new twist.
The Gujarat police’s cybercrime unit, after uncovering fresh evidence, has now dismissed the theory involving a teenage suspect who allegedly took his life in Dubai. This development came after his residence was searched by cyber cell detectives.
Officials from the cyber cell said, “We have received a response from Microsoft indicating that one of the four threat emails sent via the dark web to the school was composed in Outlook, linked to a licensed Microsoft Office version. We’ve identified the account holder of the license. We are proceeding with utmost caution.”
Cybercrime insiders said they requested Microsoft to confirm the identity linked to the registered license. The individual in question is based in Ahmedabad.
In September 2020, the school began receiving threat emails via the dark web, demanding exam postponements. The sender threatened to release photos of female students, followed by a string of three emails and the posting of altered images of four girls.
Police said the investigation was revived in December 2023. The threat messages were transmitted using Onion Router, commonly known as the Dark Web. “We involved the school fully before renewing the investigation,” a police official said.
