New Delhi: IGI Airport Roof Collapses, 1 Dead

| Updated: June 28, 2024 12:27

The new Minister of Civil Aviation of India, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, has started his tenure with a baptism of fire. Part of the roof collapsed at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, leaving 1 dead and six injured this morning. Incidentally, the terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi. The opposition has accused the Prime Minister of having the penchant to inaugurate even the semi-finished or unfinished projects that have led to such disasters, bringing infamy to India internationally.

The Indira Gandhi International Airport is India’s busiest airport. The part of the roof over the parking and pick-up area could not sustain the heavy rains that were unleashed last night and caved in. Several vehicles are reported to have been crushed. At least one person has died and 6 more have sustained injuries. All domestic departures from the Terminal are suspended. The incident occurred at around 5 AM this morning.

The opposition is quick to slam PM Modi, who inaugurated the recently expanded Terminal 1 on March 10. They accuse the PM of “hurriedly inaugurating” an “incomplete terminal”.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge posted on X: “Corruption and criminal negligence is responsible for the collapse of shoddy infrastructure, falling like a deck of cards, in the past 10 years of Modi govt.”

Recently the Chief Priest of the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya also claimed that the ceiling was leaking. The ruling party BJP was accused of organising “Pran-Pratishta” of the temple even when it was not yet complete, inviting criticism from even Shankaracharyas.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation reached the airport and inspected Terminal 1. The T1 operations will temporarily shift to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. The three terminals, T1, T2, and T3, handle around 1,400 flights daily.

Delhi received 154 mm of days, rainfall in two days bringing the temperature down to 35.4 degrees Celsius.
