The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday stated that it has received as many as 12,600 complaints till June this year, with Uttar Pradesh having the troubling distinction of recording the highest number of complaints.
The right to dignity category—which deals with harassment other than domestic abuse—received the most complaints. According to the NCW figures, the number was 3,107. 3,544 cases of domestic violence came after this.
The data indicated that there were 1,957 reports of dowry harassment, 817 cases of molestation, 518 complaints of police apathy towards women, and 657 accusations of rape and attempt to rape. There were 493 complaints of sexual harassment, 339 of cybercrime, 345 of stalking, and 206 of honour crimes, it stated.
The statistics showed that Uttar Pradesh had the most complaints (6,470), followed by Delhi (1,113) and Maharashtra (762). There were 584 complaints in Bihar, 514 in Madhya Pradesh, 506 in Haryana, 408 in Rajasthan, 301 in Tamil Nadu, 306 in West Bengal, and 305 in Karnataka. The NCW received 28,811 complaints, all pertaining to women, in 2023.
