As many as 70 Indians, including 15 from Gujarat, have been rescued by Myanmar’s armed forces after being trapped in the cybercrime hub in Myawaddy.
The victims were coerced into participating in cybercriminal activities, primarily involving online fraud and phishing schemes, allegedly operated by Chinese crime syndicates.
The rescue operation was carried out by Myanmar’s Border Guard Forces (BGF), who raided the scam centre in KK Park. The rescued individuals, including five women, were relocated to Mae Sot, a border town in Thailand, where they are currently awaiting further proceedings.
Indian authorities are closely monitoring the situation and coordinating their repatriation.
According to media reports, the 70 rescued Indians belong to various states, including 15 from Gujarat, 20 from Maharashtra, five from Andhra Pradesh, two from Telangana, and others from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, as well as Karnataka. The five women among them are primarily from Gujarat and Maharashtra.
K Madhukar Reddy, speaking to the media, stated that 70 to 80 Indians were waiting at the bus station for further proceedings.
“We are requesting Indian authorities in Bangkok to facilitate our return to India as soon as possible,” said Reddy, who managed to contact his family in Telangana before mobile communication was cut off.
Reddy was accompanied by fellow victims, including Kakuluru Santosh from Hyderabad, Manikanta and Bodapati Ashok from Vizag, and MV Patel from Gujarat.
The raid on KK Park is part of a broader crackdown on cybercrime operations that have entrapped foreign nationals, particularly Indians, through fraudulent job offers. Many victims were lured to countries such as Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar, where they were forced into cybercrime activities.
Authorities suspect that Chinese crime syndicates have been running these scam centres for years, with some organisers already detained.
Myanmar’s militia has pledged to continue operations to dismantle additional scam networks in the region.
This operation follows a pattern of similar incidents in neighbouring Cambodia, where several Indians were recently rescued from cybercrime rings.
The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that Myanmar’s Border Guard Forces will persist with raids on scam centres as part of ongoing efforts to combat international cybercrime.
