Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath believes a Muslim family will feel safe among a hundred Hindu families. He said the same can’t be said about Hindus who don’t feel secure in Muslim-dominated regions. He supported his viewpoint citing the inflammatory situation in Bangladesh which saw minorities being targeted recently and attacks launched on temples.
Hindus have been targeted since the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh was swept out of power in August last year. Since then, Hindus have been assaulted and several priests were arrested. According to reports, Islamic radicals vandalised over 150 temples and ransacked the homes of minorities there.
“A Muslim family is the safest among a hundred Hindu families. They will have the freedom to practice all their religious deeds. But can 50 Hindus be safe among 100 Muslim families? No. Bangladesh is an example. Before this, Pakistan was an example,” he said.
“In Uttar Pradesh, Muslims are the safest. If Hindus are safe, then they are also safe. If there were riots here in UP before 2017, if Hindu shops were burning, then Muslim shops were also burning. If Hindu houses were burning, then Muslim houses were also burning. And after 2017, the riots stopped,” he added.
He responded to temple-mosque issues escalating in other states, questioning the building of mosques on Hindu sites. He sees it as a violation of Islamic principles.
He assured that the government would restore temples in Sambhal, which witnessed massive violence last year during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid, which resulted in the death of five people.
“There are 64 pilgrimage sites in Sambhal, and we have found 54. Whatever it is, we will find it. We will tell the world to see what happened in Sambhal?” Adityanath said.
