An official reported on Friday that police in Mumbai busted an illegal call centre by detaining 11 people who had been defrauding American citizens by promising them lucrative returns on their investments.
The unnamed contact centre operating out of Wadala (East) was known to defraud customers by requesting that they deposit $500 to $1,000 into their bank accounts in exchange for enticing returns, according to officials of Unit 3 of the crime branch.
According to an official, the accused would phone US citizens pretending to be phoning from the UK, New Delhi, or Mumbai and would solicit investments in shares, currencies, and commodities with high profits.
However, investors in these securities did not receive the promised returns. The police stated that throughout their investigation, authorities discovered that the suspects had contacted over 2,000 investors and defrauded them out of many crores.
From the call centre’s premises, police seized 15 laptops, 1 desktop, 2 routers, and a LAN machine. The arrested people were produced before a judge, which, according to police, ordered that they remain in police custody until January 27.
