MSU Student From Bangladesh Dies By Suicide, Friends Cite ‘Academic Pressure’

| Updated: January 30, 2025 12:53

A 20-year-old Bangladeshi student, Mohana Mandal, was found dead at her residence in Vadodara on Wednesday in a suspected case of suicide, police said. She was a first-year student of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Maharaja Sayajirao University.

According to police, Mandal took her own life on the day of her first exam. When her parents were unable to contact her, they alerted her friends, who visited her accommodation in Raopura and discovered her body.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ashok Rathava said that a suicide note, believed to be in Mandal’s handwriting, was found at the scene.

In the note, she mentioned that no one was to be blamed for her decision. “A case of accidental death has been filed at Raopura police station, and an investigation is underway,” he added.

The post-mortem examination conducted on Wednesday confirmed asphyxiation, possibly due to hanging, as the cause of death.

Mandal’s friends, also from Bangladesh, informed the police that she had been struggling with academic pressure and had difficulty coping with her subject. She had also missed her first test earlier in the day.

Mandal moved to M S University in September last year after securing 90% in her Class XII exams in Bangladesh. Initially, she lived in the university hostel but later chose to shift to an independent apartment in Raopura.

“One of her friends had her exam admission ticket, but she did not turn up at the centre. After the exam, her friend tried to contact her, but she was unavailable. It was only later that night, after her parents reached out with concerns, that her friends visited her flat and found her hanging,” a friend recounted.

The investigation is ongoing.
