As his mother walked into her 100th birthday, Modi got emotional and penned down a heartfelt message for her. He penned the following message:
“Today, I feel extremely happy and fortunate to share that my mother Smt. Heeraba Modi is entering her hundredth year. This is going to be her birth centenary year.” wrote PM Modi.
Living Embodiment of the word “Resilience”
Modi shared how his mother had lost her mother at a young age, and she doesn’t even remember his grandmother’s face. He says that ““My Mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers.”
He recalls how his mother used to work extra besides the housework, she used to wash utensils and spin the charkha to meet the household expenses. He reminisces how his mother was brave even during bad times. When it used to flood water in the monsoons, she would patiently put buckets and utensils below the leaks and hold her calm even in the face of adversity.
Best way to be happy is to indulge in others’ happiness
Modi recalls how others’ happiness would make her mother happy. He shares how a close friend of his father passed away at an early age. Modi’s mother brought his son, Abbas to their home and she loved him like her own. She prepared his favorite dishes on Eid, and not only Abbas, but the entire colony used to come to relish his mother’s dishes.
Hardwork – The not so secret ingredient to living a fulfilling life.
Modi’s face beams with pride as he says that his parent’s honesty and self respect have been their most prominent qualities. Despite the adversities thrown in their lives, Modi’s parents never compromised on their self respect or integrity. Hardwork has surely been their Mantra of Life.
PM Modi’s mother has publicly accompanied him on only two occasions
PM Modi recalls that his mother has only accompanied him twice publicly – one was when she applied tilak upon his forehead in public in Ahmedabad after he returned from Srinagar where he had hosted the national flag at Lal Chowk, second was when he first took the oath as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Remaining updated with current events of the world
Modi said his mother is updated with the current developments of the world. When asked how many hours she watches television, she said she doesn’t like news in which people are fighting, she prefers news in which people explain calmly and she only watches such news.
Respectful of others’ choices
Modi emphasized how his mother not only respects other people’s choices but also refrains from giving her unsolicited opinions. In fact, when he decided to leave home, it was his mother who told him “Do as your mind says”

Modi shares that his mother has confessed that she does not understand much of his work, but she wants him to know that she does not endorse him taking bribes of any kind. He further reveals that whenever they talk on call, his mother reminds him not to do anything bad and always work for the development of the poor.

Modi shares how his mother has always been a dutiful citizen and has voted in every election, from the Panchayats to the Parliament.
Reverence for Cleanliness
Modi states that his mother has always been a supporter of cleanliness. He recalls that whenever a worker came to clean the drain adjacent to their house in Vadnagar, she would offer them tea for sure.
Simplicity is the way to a Happy Life
Modi’s mother still lives a simplistic lifestyle, and has no assets to her name. She does not believe in any grandeur. She does not wear any ornaments and neither does she hold interest in wearing any, shares Modi.
