The centre said on Friday, that more than 16 lakh Indian nationals have given up their citizenship since 2011 comprising 183,741 in this year.
On being asked in the winter session of Parliament, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan provided the figures. He said that the number of Indians who yielded their permanent citizenship of India in 2015 was 131,489, 141,603 in 2016, 133,049 in 2017, 134,561 in 2018, 144,017 in 2019, 85,256 in 2020 and 163,370 in 2021.
He added that the figures for 2011 were 1,22,819, 1,20,923 in 2012, 1,31,405 in 2013, and 1,29,328 in 2014. Since 2011, 16,21,561 Indians have renounced their Indian citizenship in total.
The minister added that 93 foreign nationals acquired Indian citizenship in 2015, 153 in 2016, 175 in 2017, 129 in 2018, 113 in 2019, 27 in 2020, 42 in 2021, and 60 in 2022, excluding nationals of Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
