The court sent the main accused in the Morbi Bridge collapse. Jaysukh Patel, MD of Oreva Company, to jail after his 7-day remand period; the police did not request additional remand.
A complaint was filed at the Morbi City B Division Police Station in this regard, and on January 31, 2023, Jaysukh Patel gave a statement to Morbi’s Chief Judicial Magistrate. The investigating officer in the case, Deputy Superintendent of Police PS Zala filed a 1262-page chargesheet on January 27, 2023. The 1,262-page charge sheet named ten accused, including Jaysukh Patel, managing director of Oreva Group.
Jaysukh Patel was presented in court on the completion of his remand. After the police did not seek additional remand, the court sent Jaysukh Patel to prison.
Earlier in November last year, the Supreme Court had termed the collapse of the bridge as a “huge tragedy,” and had asked the Gujarat High Court to investigate this matter on a timely basis. On November 7, 2022 the Gujarat High Court took suo motu cognizance of the incident and issued notices to officials seeking a report within a week.
In particular, the Overa Group was responsible for the operation of the bridge and the maintenance of the British-era suspension bridge over the Machhu River, which had collapsed.
In the Morbi suspension bridge accident, the police’s charge sheet revealed the offence of Jaysukh Patel, chairman of Oreva Group. As per the charge sheet, the Oreva Group had secured the contract for management, maintenance, security, ticketing, and all administrative work for 15 years. It has been alleged in the charge sheet that the Oreva company has shown gross negligence in repairing the bridge.
It may be noted that on November 30, 2022, 135 people died due to the collapse of a suspension bridge in Morbi.
