In a recent development related to the Morbi suspension bridge collapse that claimed 135 lives last year, the managing director of Oreva Group, Jaysukh Patel has been sent to police custody for 7 days.
The special investigation team (SIT) established by the state government to probe the case has been granted custody of Patel by Chief Judicial Magistrate M J Khan until 8th February. The SIT had requested a 14-day remand.
On Tuesday night, after the court issued an arrest warrant for Patel, he turned himself in to the authorities. Patel’s company was responsible for the maintenance and operation of the bridge which collapsed on 30th October, 2022.
According to government prosecutor Sanjay Vora, the company made cosmetic repairs to the bridge instead of replacing the crucial cable wires. This was revealed in the court during the prosecution’s testimony.
The developments in the case have once again brought the tragedy of the Morbi suspension bridge collapse into the spotlight, reminding the citizens of the need for improved infrastructure and safety measures.
