Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday to discuss the ongoing heavy rainfall situation in the state. During the discussion, PM Modi received a detailed briefing on the relief and rescue operations currently underway.
Taking to X (formally Twitter), Gujarat CM said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with me about the heavy rain situation in Gujarat and received detailed information about the relief and rescue operations. He provided guidance on protecting the lives and livestock of citizens and assured Gujarat of all necessary support and assistance from the Central Government.”
“The Prime Minister is constantly monitoring the situation and is deeply concerned about Gujarat. He has a deep affection in his heart for the people of Gujarat. During natural calamities and whenever needed, he always stands by Gujarat and its people, offering warmth and invaluable guidance.” the CM added.
IMD’s latest advisory
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood danger notification in its most recent bulletin, which was released on Tuesday.
According to this bulletin, which is effective until 5:30 p.m. on August 28th, Ahmedabad, Anand, Bharuch, Kheda, Mahisagar, Narmada, Vadodara, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Navsari, Panchmahal, Surat, Tapi, Valsad, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Botad, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Gir Somnath, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Rajkot, Surendranagar, Morbi and Kutch districts are at risk of flash floods by the evening of August 28th.
The advisory also mentioned that because of the anticipated rainfall over the next 24 hours, surface runoff/inundation may occur in certain completely saturated soils and low-lying regions over the AoC, as indicated by the map.
Dwarka’s situation
Following nearly 18 inches of rain that were reported in the district over the course of the last 24 hours, which concluded at 6 a.m. this morning, Devbhoomi Dwarka is currently experiencing constant severe rainfall. The district had up to 5.1 inches of rain on Wednesday between the hours of 6 a.m. and 12 p.m.
The top four talukas in the Devbhoomi Dwarka district, which have the most rainfall by noon today, are Dwarka, Khambhalia, Bhanvad and Kalyanpur. After these talukas, Lalpur in Jamnagar and Umarpada in Surat had experienced more than two inches of rain by noon.
188 talukas had thunderstorms between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. Of them, 24 reported more than an inch of rain, but only 6 had more than 2 inches by noon.
BJP’s state unit in action
In an effort to assist those impacted by the rain, the Gujarat unit of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced two helpline numbers: 079-23276943 and 079-23276944.
The State BJP president and Union Jalshakti Minister, CR Patil, initiated this helpline for districts impacted by rain, according to a statement by the party. He directs that BJP workers assist people in need in the affected regions.
