The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is expected to initiate the census process in 2025, with completion anticipated by 2026. This exercise to tally the country’s population will occur after a four-year delay.
According to reports, the Centre would begin the Lok Sabha seat delimitation process after the census is over. By 2028, the delimitation process should be finished.
The opposition, led by Congress, has been calling for a census based on caste. However, the general outline of the census process has not been made public.
Surveys of sub-sects within the General and SC-ST categories could be included in the census. Additionally, the number of people who fall into the general, scheduled caste, and scheduled tribal groups will be recorded.
In response to the media reports, Congress leader Manickam Tagore alleged the government’s failure to conduct a caste-based census is a betrayal of the OBC communities.
“Modi’s refusal to conduct a #CasteCensus is a clear betrayal of OBC communities. Ignoring the voices demanding justice, he’s denying our people their due representation—all because of political arrogance. Will RSS, JDU,&TDP stand with the people or stay silent?” he said.
Rahul Gandhi stated that the Congress party will consider eliminating reservations once India is a “fair place” during an interview with Georgetown University’s teachers and students last month in Washington, DC.
He also emphasised the necessity of a caste census, stating that OBCs, Dalits, and Adivasis, who make up 90% of the population, are not adequately represented in the nation.
He added that the caste census is a simple approach to determine how many Dalits, lower castes, and backward castes are contributing.
