Milind Soman, actor and supermodel, has been awarded as the ‘Best Vegan Fashion Style Icon’ at the PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), India’s Vegan Fashion Awards 2021.
Milind Soman has been an advocate for animal welfare for a long time and has often highlighted the need to raise a voice against animal cruelty. In an Instagram post from March 2019, he wrote “No Leather, no silk, no wool.”
Other awardees included Alia Bhatt’s clothing brand Ed-a-Mamma. It won the award for the Best Vegan Kidswear Brand and Kunal Avant and Sunny Leone’s I Am Animal’s stylist sportswear brand which won the Best Vegan Activewear.
The awards further noted 33 designers who pledged to go leather free following a letter from Lakme Fashion Week, the Fashion Design Council of India and PETA India.
PETA India senior media and celebrity projects coordination said in a press statement that it is now easier than ever to get a fashion-forward look that would leave animal cruelty in the past.
This comes after, back in 2017, Pulse of the Fashion Industry released a report that informed that leather, silk and wool are amongst the most polluting materials in fashion.
