MICA students in Ahmedabad are preparing to give Amdavadis a taste of participatory drama. The student-run theatre society at MICA – Sankalp will perform a rendition of “Ladai” written by the Late Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena Natarani Amphitheatre which will be performed on January 22 as part of their annual production.
Ladai is a play that highlights issues that are deeply rooted in the nation and areas where a small change can lead to a brighter future for all. The annual production, directed by second-year students Raghuveer TR and Shashwat Jain, features an ensemble cast of 38 actors from various MICA courses.
It aims to bring together an unique blend of people from various backgrounds who will perform in synergy to create an experience to remember for all those who witness the live performance. The show is open to the public, and the tickets are available on BookMyShow.
The co-director, Raghuveer TR said, “We chose this play because of its relevance to the present times. We also want to instil the thought of people coming together for the welfare of the nation and one another.”
Shashwat Jain, co-director of the play, added, “Sankalp has been the flag bearer of creative expression through theatre for the last three decades, providing its students with a stage to perform nationally renowned plays. This play is special as we are back after two long years.”
Shounak Sengupta, a first-year student, said, “I have always been passionate about the stage, and I am glad that I will be able to channel it through Sankalp. Additionally, the chance to perform two shows at the Natarani Theatre is a huge opportunity for us, and we feel privileged. We sincerely hope that the play becomes a moving experience for the audience and will succeed in uniting people in the perpetual fight for justice and righteousness.”
However, Satyavrat, a middle-aged common man, agitated by the issues plaguing the country, goes on a trial to solve everything by himself to instil thoughts of justice in the minds of the common public. His quest for justice and change takes him on a journey like never seen before. Will he succeed in his attempt? Will he be able to bring in the change he wants? Watch the play and see for yourself.
As part of this tradition, MICA each year gears up the stage for a grand play for its Amdavadi audience. Sankalp has shown renowned works such as Girish Karnad’s ‘Tuglaq,’ Vijay Tendulkar’s ‘Encounter in Umbugland,’ Dharmavir Bharti’s ‘Suraj Ka Satwan Ghoda,’ Woody Allen’s ‘Death,’ and Nina Paley’s ‘Sita Sings the Blues,’ among others, over the last 14 years.
