Debarata Chattopadhyay, a professor of English Literature from Chakdah, West Bengal, is a passionate bibliophile who has a massive collection of books worth more than Rs 1 crore. He recently made news when he purchased books worth Rs 3.36 lakh from the International Kolkata Book Fair, where he visited eight times with his students.
He said he did not keep track of how many books he bought, but he was always on the lookout for new and rare books from different genres and authors. He also frequents College Street, a popular hub for book lovers in Kolkata, where he spends hours browsing through books and befriending publishers from various cities.
He said buying books is not only his hobby, but also his way of life. He enjoys reading and travelling, and whenever he visits a new place, he makes sure to buy books from there. He said he has 14,000 books in his personal library, which he considers his most valuable possession.
