The admission process for four NEET-based courses, including medical and dental, has faced significant delays. Despite this, the All India Quota admission process commenced on August 14, even as Gujarat awaited renewal permissions for its medical colleges. On Friday, the Medical Commission granted renewal permissions to all 680 medical colleges across the country.
Among these, 39 medical colleges in Gujarat have been approved as per the 2023-24 meetings. Gujarat boasts over 6,800 MBBS seats, contributing significantly to the more than one lakh seats available nationwide. Typically, the Medical Commission conducts inspections for renewal permissions annually, issuing reports based on identified deficiencies. However, this year, as in previous years, delays in inspection and approval have persisted, leading to the allocation of seats based on the previous year’s figures.
Notably, 20 medical colleges in Gujarat and several others across the country were penalised by the commission for various deficiencies. Despite many colleges not paying the penalties, all UG medical colleges, including those in Gujarat, have been granted admission permissions for the 2024-25 academic year, maintaining the seat numbers from 2023-24. The commission has warned that colleges failing to pay penalties will face seat reductions in 2025-26. While renewal permissions have been issued, final permissions are still pending for 115 new private colleges nationwide, including three in Gujarat.
