A married man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly killing his 29-year-old girlfriend at her Naigaon home near Mumbai and dumping her body in a creek in Valsad in Gujarat.
The victim, Naina Mahat, reportedly worked as a makeup artist, while the accused, Manohar Shukla, was a graphic designer. The incident took place in August.
Preliminary investigations by Naigaon police revealed that both met while working in the film industry about five years ago. On August 12, the victim’s family approached the Naigaon police as her cell phone was unreachable. Mahat stayed on rent in Suntech complex in Naigaon (east). Her family knew about their relationship. Manohar’s wife, who also knew about her husband’s affair, is also a prime suspect as she has been captured on the CCTV of Mahat’s building while accompanying Shukla as they left with a suitcase.
Police said Mahat was killed and the body was stuffed in a suitcase and dumped in the Valsad creek. Shukla, who was arrested early Tuesday, told the police that he had called off the relationship after his wife learned about their affair. Mahat, however, pestered him to marry her. She reportedly threatened to file a rape case against him.
As the police were investigating the missing case, the Valsad police found the body of a woman, who was later identified as Mahat.
Police said they are ascertaining how the body was taken to Valsad.
