Eight companies of the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) have arrived in Imphal, Manipur, amid an increase in violence. These personnel would be stationed in sensitive and remote regions.
A day after another contingent of 11 CAPF companies landed in the state, these forces arrived in Imphal on Wednesday.
An official said, “Four companies each of CRPF and BSF will be deployed in sensitive and fringe areas of the state.”
The Mahila Battalion is one of the CRPF companies. Recently, the Centre said that 50 additional CAPF companies would be deployed in Manipur. Following last week’s looting of Congress and BJP offices in the Jiribam Hill district, violence in the state has increased.
The incidents happened when mobs in many Imphal Valley districts, where an indefinite curfew has been imposed, set fire to the residences of three BJP legislators, including a senior minister and a Congress MLA. Additionally, security officers stopped the agitators’ efforts to enter Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s ancestral home.
