The Congress is expected to make a “big announcement” on Wednesday. The announcement is likely to be part of the party’s manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The declaration will reportedly be significant for youth, women, farmers and the poor. The Congress party will offer ‘right to employment’ to youth and stop the Agniveer scheme, sources said.
The declaration will be made during a public rally in Badnawar in Madhya Pradesh. The rally will be attended by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is currently passing through Madhya Pradesh. On Tuesday evening, he said in a post on X, “Youth of the country! Now degrees will be respected, problems will be solved and everyone will get work”.
This is reportedly the first time ever that a scheme to give ‘right to employment’ is being considered. An allowance may also be offered to the youth.
The Congress is also likely to scrap the Agniveer recruitment programme for the Army and resume the old recruitment scheme.
Relief in education loans
The party will introduce a rebate on the interest rate on education loans and introduce a stringent law and strict punishment to curb paper leaks.
The poll manifesto will also talk of putting more money into women’s accounts under various schemes. The Congress party will also give legal guarantee to farmers regarding the minimum support price and promise to conduct a caste-based census in the country.
The 16-member Congress manifesto committee, headed by former Union minister P. Chidambaram, held a meeting in Delhi on Tuesday evening. The committee was formed in December 2023.
